What does Nature give us? Many things of course, but to an artist it offers endless studies in formations. An area of sandstone for instance offers many compositions to ponder. Small paintings are one way to explore these and add to an artists repertoire for larger works. Some considerations that become evident are such things as small shapes verses big ones, small spaces among larger, and small transitions of colour into highlights. These are some of the elements that may often be observed in nature.
The freedom of painting from nature is aided by our primary observations, the simplified concepts envisioned and the good emotions felt in their making. These are the beginnings of big ideas and great paintings.
